Storytelling & Story Making

I do not have much to update on my new occupation! This week has been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for my family and I, so I decided to review some of the practices that I have enjoyed. A few of the practices I used this week were 5-4-3-2-1, square breathing, and a little bit of coloring! I also completed a few exercises from my workbooks that helped me quite a bit, but in very different ways! I think everyone could benefit from one or both of them, so I decided to share both of them this week!

As I was reading the article, A Grounded Theory of Techniques for Occupational Storytelling and Occupational Story Making by Clark, Ennevor, and Richarson (1996), I started to think about how big of a role storytelling and story making has in my everyday life. Almost every social interaction we have in our day-to-day lives consists of  storytelling, and everything we do derives from story making. Choosing my new occupation and continuing to do it is story making because It can help me to become more of an occupational being by helping me to cope with everyday life and am working to better my ability to reach mindfulness. I then use storytelling to share my experiences each week through my blog!

  1. Hi Nicole,

Don't know what is going on with the "emotional rollercoaster" you described, but I hope you're okay. If you need someone to talk to feel free to reach out to me! I got your back. The paragraph you wrote about storytelling was insightful. It seems like each day and each action we do is a part of our story. It is great that you are using mindfulness as a way to cope with everyday life. It hopefully makes you more present in your own story as well. Would you say that is the case?

    1. Hi Kayla,

      Thank you!
I do think that my new occupation helps me to be present in my own story. Mindfulness is defined as being present in the moment you are in! Being able to do this has helped me alot with stress management and bring my focus more on what I am doing instead of the stresses around it. I have found that I have started do enjoy tasks that I have not previously!
